The ingredients needed to make Basic dhal:
  1. Get 300 g lentils
  2. Make ready 1 red onion
  3. Get 5 cloves garlic
  4. Take 1 green chilli
  5. Take 1 tsp cumin seeds
  6. Get 1 tsp turmeric
  7. Get 1 tsp unidentified spice (if in doubt do garam masala or ground coriander)
  8. Prepare 25 g butter

Now add the garlic, ginger, fresh coriander (or keep it and use it as a garnish at the end), turmeric, and cayenne pepper. Heat the oil in a slow cooker over high heat. Add the lentils, cumin, turmeric, garam masala, chilli powder, red chilli, onion, garlic and ginger, and cook, stirring, until the onion softens. Stir in the parsley just before serving.

Instructions to make Basic dhal:
  1. Wash the lentils first, then add to a saucepan with about 1 litre water
  2. Bring to the boil then simmer for about 30 mins. They should break down and absorb the water.
  3. In a frying pan, melt the butter over a medium heat then add the onion and cumin seeds.
  4. After 5 mins the onions should be browned so add the chilli and garlic
  5. Cook for another 5 mins or so then add the spices and turn off the heat.
  6. Once the lentils have thickened to your desired consistency (you might have to add more water if it’s too thick), add the onion mixture to the pan and stir. Take a generous pinch of salt and stir it in. Taste to see if it’s to your liking, if not, add more.
  7. Serve with rice, popadums or chapatti
